Using cutting edge web features: Warning users with outdated browsers

Browser-Update.org ScreenshotThere are new innovations in web design all the time, but the biggest problem with being able to use them is the variety of browsers and versions of those browsers out there. There are times when you have to design for the lowest common denominator (which, currently, is Internet Explorer 8), but if you don’t have that constraint put upon you by a client, and want to design with current browsers in mind, then you should look at Browser-Update.org’s solution.

All that Browser-Update.org’s code does is warn your visitors that some features may not work or display as intended because they have an outdated browser, and directs them to where they can download the newest version of their browser. It does this unobtrusively, with a yellow information bar at the top of the screen. It works by using JavaScript to detect the browser and version and compares that with a list of the newest versions maintained at Browser-Update.org.
